The debate on Sept. 26, '08 between Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Republican John McCain saw the two draw their swords in their first battle face to face encounter with others. Both men scored on their areas of strength as expected, Obama home their points about the economy, while McCain remained firm on issues of foreign policy and national security.
The opinion of the American press largely seems that both Obama and McCain are tied neck to neck race, with no one emerging as an easy winner. According to Mary Anne Ostrom Mercury News, or the candidates could alter significantly the number of his supporters and help persuade undecided Americans, as both seemed to reiterate their political differences that has already become clear in the course of the campaign 2008 presidential race to date. None of them was able to deal specifically with the government bailout of $ 700 billion and the catastrophic changes in the financial sector, including the largest bank failure in U.S. history.
However, since the economic issue has clearly gained prominence in the minds of thousands of common Americans, Obama seemed to fare slightly better than its rival which has the disadvantage of the song sad record of the Bush administration for holding it. His take economic policy in this presidential campaign has not been able to impress a lot either, as Obama continues to hold the advantage in all financial matters. Constant linking of Obama McCain with President Bush, calling the first extension of the latter in which economic policies are concerned also seems be having the desired effect on the mind of the American public.
The recent turmoil on Wall Street has shaken America and McCain is certainly capable of dissipating public fears. Although it has the advantage over Obama on foreign policy and national security, lost to Obama on the economy issue – it is very important in this election – for the dismal performance of his party, as well as by Obama's arguments seem to appeal to ordinary people.
Even if the media media gave more or less a credit equal to two, after debate polls said Obama as the clear winner. A CBS poll of undecided voters found that 40 percent saying Obama came out on top in the debate, compared with 25 percent for McCain. In a CNN online poll, Obama emerged on top with 67 percent of the vote while McCain has only 28 percent of the vote. In an NBC poll Obama won 51 percent of the vote against 28 percent for McCain. Meanwhile, Time magazine commentator Mark Halperin gave Obama a grade of A and B-McCain for his performances.
Although the first debate at an early stage to predict the final outcome certainly promises to be one of the most exciting races and more adjusted to the U.S. White House has ever seen. The two rivals next meeting 7 and 15 October, while their running mates will be the faces on 2 October.
